What is involved in an autism diagnosis in Western Australia?

If you are looking to get your child assessed for autism in WA, an assessment needs to be completed by a paediatrician, psychologist and speech pathologist trained in the use of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2). The ADOS-2 involves a semi-structured assessment with the child and a comprehensive interview with the parent or caregiver. Additional observations can be completed if needed.

The speech pathologist will liaise with all relevant professionals to ensure a consensus regarding the child’s presentation. A comprehensive report will then be written, and the speech therapist will be able to offer families further support as needed with recommendations for services to access. A further follow-up appointment can be arranged to discuss the report as requested.
