Autism Assessments in Perth

At CommuniKids Speech Therapy, our qualified and experienced speech therapists can complete the speech pathology component of the autism assessment process. We have clinics in both Jolimont and Victoria Park, so we are bound to have one of our expert therapists near you.

What is involved in an autism diagnosis in Western Australia?

If you are looking to get your child assessed for autism in WA, an assessment needs to be completed by a paediatrician, psychologist and speech pathologist trained in the use of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS).

At CommuniKids Speech Therapy, we are able to offer the speech therapy portion of the assessment. This typically involves two parts:

• A comprehensive interview with the parent or caregiver.

• An assessment with the child using the ADOS. This assessment is a semi-structured, play-based (age dependent) assessment tool and is considered the gold standard of autism assessments.

The speech pathologist will liaise with all relevant professionals to ensure a consensus regarding the child’s presentation. A comprehensive report will then be written, and the speech therapist will be able to offer families further support as needed with recommendations for services to access.
